BUTLER COUNTY, Kan. — Lt. Travis Pierce’s policing philosophy is simple; do unto others as you’d have them do unto you. That’s exactly what he said he did last week when he got a call about a toddler wandering near a busy street. Pierce said the mom told officers her son had a habit of unlocking doors and running out whenever he got the the chance.

“I’m a new dad and sometimes it’s not bad parenting, this kid was fascinated with going outside and it was hard for his mom to keep up,” Pierce said.

Pierce said putting the child into protective custody would hurt the situation rather than help, so he went with the little boy’s grandma to Wal-Mart instead.
