WEEHAWKEN, N.J. A police officer jumped into the Hudson River yesterday to rescue a man who was floundering in the water.

Responding to a report of a man in the water at around 3:30 p.m., Weehawken Lt. Richard DeCosmis Jr. and Police Officer John Sabato arrived at the pier at Arthur’s Landing Restaurant at Port Imperial, and saw the 46-year-old Bergen County man in distress about 30 yards from the shoreline, Deputy Chief Jeffrey Fulcher said.

The officers waded into the water and the man told them that he was losing feeling in his arms and legs and was having difficulty holding his head above water. DeCosmis received a life jacket from workers at a neighboring pier and swam out to pull the man to shore.

Both the man and DeCosmis were taken to Palisades Medical Center for treatment and observation. DeCosmis was released and returned to duty soon after. The man remains at the hospital and was in “fairly good condition” last night, police said.

Investigators found that the man had driven down from his home in Cresskill. Police are still investigating why the man went into the water.
