HATBORO, Pa. — Pennsylvania police officer Ryan Allen died this week, six months after a severe reaction to a bee sting left him incapacitated, PennLive.com reported. Allen went into cardiac arrest after he was stung in October, leading to a brain injury from lack of oxygen, the report said.
Allen spent months in rehabilitation, but in March, Allen’s wife shared a somber update. Whitney Allen said doctors believed there was “no chance” Allen would recover, and that the family had decided Allen would spend the rest of his days in hospice care.
“As you can imagine, this decision is heartbreaking as we had so much hope that Ryan could recover,” Whitney wrote in her March Facebook post. “We want to do what is best for Ryan and that is to give him his freedom and peace after so much trauma and pain.”
Hatboro Police Chief James Gardner announced Allen’s death on Thursday.
“Although he fought long and hard, he ultimately could not overcome the damage done to his body as a result of the reaction,” Gardner wrote on Facebook. “We are forever grateful for the love and support shown during this difficult time.”
Allen joined the Hatboro Police Department in 2013 and helped start the agency’s first K-9 program, according to PennLive.
