Texas police captain claims discrimination

Corpus Christi Caller-Times

A Corpus Christi police captain has filed a federal lawsuit against the city, citing discrimination. According to the lawsuit, Capt. Emilio Sanchez was denied promotions because of his race and age.

It states he was “overlooked for promotions although he had an outstanding record of employment and was well-qualified for the positions.”

Sanchez, 51, was hired as an officer for the department in August 1979. The lawsuit also states the city selected non-Mexican-American applicants who were younger than Sanchez for the positions.

According to online city records, Sanchez made $83,040 last year.

A jury trial has been set for Dec. 17.
