RUSH SPRINGS, Okla. — Police released video on Friday related to the July 6 fatal officer-involved shooting of Thomas Vandemark, 65.
Bodycam video showed Rush Springs police officer Daniel Smith responding to a domestic violence call just after 10 p.m.
In the video, Smith can be seen just outside the driver side door of his vehicle and beginning to back up after shining his flashlight toward the house.
“73 County be advised subject’s got a gun. Let me see your hands,” Smith can be heard in the video.
Vandemark could be heard taunting the officer and shortly after Smith ordered Vandemark to drop his gun twice as he was walking toward the officer’s vehicle. Vandemark can be seen walking toward the vehicle with one arm behind his back as the officer fired one shot and Vandemark dropped to the ground.
The state medical examiner’s office reported Vandemark died from a gunshot wound to the neck.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident and the Grady County District Attorney was not available for comment when contacted by The Oklahoman on Friday afternoon.
