SUNBURY, Ohio — A dog who faced euthanization has joined Clay Township police as the state’s first pit bull K-9.
Leonard was deemed too aggressive and not suitable for adoption, WSYX reported. He was put on the euthanization list.
Humane Society Director Jim Alloway, who has a background in law enforcement, saw Leonard’s potential as a K-9.
“I walked out with a squeegee. He ran up and bit it and then he went running through the yard,” Alloway told WSYX. “I knew it was a special characteristic. He wasn’t being aggressive. He wanted to play.”
He called Storm Dog Tactical, who trained Leonard and taught him commands.
“That is what we are looking for is that dog that has that high drive [play drive], but they are able to mentally focus and concentrate on the tasks we are asking them to do,” Storm Dog Tactical Director of Training and Operations Krishea Osborne told WCMH.
Leonard and his handler, Police Chief Terry Mitchell, have completed their narcotics training and started working this past weekend.
