NEW YORK — Two lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge were shut down early morning after a man climbed onto the bridge’s suspension cables, hundreds of feet above the roadway, reported PIX 11. NYPD officers with the Emergency Services Unit responded to the precarious situation, walking out onto the cables.
One video shows multiple officers, in helmets and harnesses, perched atop the suspension cable. A dozen feet below them a man clings to a thinner cable. Another video shows the man climbing down, where he is met by an officer at a lower crossbeam.
The man was experiencing a mental health crisis, police said.
“The individual sat dangerously on the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge, high above the East River,” NYPD Special Ops tweeted. “ESU successfully established a dialogue and safely talked the person down.”
The man, who wasn’t named, was taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to the report.
