PLANO, Texas — A 19-year-old man who was involved in a Plano police standoff that lasted more than 12 hours was expected to undergo a hospital evaluation Friday.
Brandon Marlowe Hofer of Plano was charged with aggravated assault, said Plano public information officer Rick McDonald. He was taken into custody about 11:30 p.m. Thursday when he exited the house after police tactical officers deployed gas canisters.
Plano tactical officers surrounded the home in the 4400 block of Turnberry Court, near Preston Meadow and Legacy drives, after the man got into an argument with his mother Thursday morning.
About 10 p.m., Garland tactical officers were called in to relieve the Plano officers who had been on the scene more than 10 hours.
Between 7 and 8 p.m., multiple gas canisters were fired into the house in an effort to flush him out, said Plano police Officer Rick McDonald, a department spokesman. By 9 p.m., the man was still in the house and police remained waiting outside.
The lull in activity came late Thursday evening after gunshots were fired on two separate occasions during the standoff.
Just before 5 p.m., the man walked into his back yard with a gun in his hand after officers appeared to breach a back fence. Three shots were fired. At 8 p.m., at least two more gunshots were heard.
Police officials speaking to the media weren’t sure who had fired the shots. The man had been in the home alone since his mother left at 11:20 a.m. and called police for help.
Police saw the man moving around in the house and had not talked to him since he ran out the back door Thursday evening.
Police used an automated calling system Thursday evening to notify about 350 neighbors about the incident.
During the day, Haun Elementary School was in partial lockdown as a precautionary measure, Plano ISD spokeswoman Nancy Long said. Once the school day ended, parents were required to pick up children who had walked or biked to school.
