A 7-year-old boy suffered a fractured pelvis early Monday when the car he was riding in crashed into a World War I flag monument while the driver tried to flee police in north Minneapolis.
The car’s driver, who faces possible felony charges for fleeing and child endangerment, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He and the boy were taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.
The driver’s name has not been released. The monument was chipped and scratched by the car, and the site was cleaned up Monday afternoon, said Jon Oyanagi, river district manager for the Minneapolis Park Board.
The crash occurred shortly after midnight when officers attempted to stop a car that was being driven erratically and ran several red lights, Lt. Greg Reinhardt said.
The car fled and eventually crashed into the monument at Victory Memorial Drive and 45th Avenue N.
A small fire broke out and officers removed the boy, who was not wearing a seat belt, Reinhardt said. The driver had to be freed by firefighters, Reinhardt said.
