MADISON, N.Y. — A man was wielding two machetes when officers arrived on the Madison County street, troopers said.
Police had responded to Canal Street in the town of Madison around 6 p.m. Friday after a caller reported a man was yelling and throwing items on the side of the road, the New York State Police said. When troopers and Madison County sheriff’s deputies arrived, Corey D. Streeter was using two machetes to damage wires outside a NYSEG power substation, troopers said.
When he spotted the officers, Streeter retreated to his Dodge Journey and split, troopers said.
Streeter, 30, of Syracuse, refused to stop when officers tried to pull him over on Route 20, troopers said. But when he drove into Herkimer County, state police used spikes to flatten one of Streeter’s tires, troopers said.
Streeter pulled his SUV into a parking lot in the village of Herkimer and stopped, troopers said. He was then arrested.
Streeter was charged with second-degree criminal mischief, a felony, along with third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both misdemeanors. As of Saturday afternoon, he remained in the Madison County Jail.
