HOUSTON — A pursuit came to a wild end when the suspect drove into a bayou, leading officers to jump in to arrest the suspect and rescue a toddler who was in the back seat, KTRK reports.

Houston police attempted to stop the driver, but the driver kept going. Officers pursued the suspect for about 10 minutes. The driver cut through a field to get away from the officers, but the field ended at the bank of Sims Bayou.

Police did not know there was a small child in the car when they were pursuing the suspect. Officers found out after the Mini Cooper ended up in the bayou. Police said the car went into 15 feet of water.

Four officers went into the water after the suspect. That’s when they saw the man removing a child from the back seat. The officers took the child, who was under the age of two, and brought the child safely to shore.

The pursuit didn’t quite end there. Police said the suspect attempted to swim away in the opposite direction. Officers swam out to the suspect and were able to apprehend him almost at the other end of the bayou.

The suspect faces felony evading charges and could be charged with child endangerment. Police said one officer on scene sprained his ankle and was checked out the hospital.
