VANCOUVER, Wash. — Shane Edward Runyon, who appeared to be a hostage during a standoff with police last July, was arrested today on four counts of first-degree attempted murder, accused of intentionally creating an ambush situation.

Vancouver police arrested Runyon, 33, shortly before noon at 10618 N.E. Seventh St., in the Cascade Park area, and booked him into the Clark County Jail, according to a news release.

The arrest stemmed from an armed confrontation between Matthew Ryan Hastings and SWAT Team members on July 18 at a rental house at 15604 S.E. 12th St., in the Cascade Park area.

Runyon was identified as a hostage during the incident and officers entered the house to attempt to rescue Runyon, the news release says.

But shots were fired, the officers retreated and one of them, Vancouver Police Cpl. Chris LeBlanc, was severely wounded. A single bullet entered his left armpit, shattered a rib and went through his lung. Three other officers were near LeBlanc at the time.

Runyon was released from the house at 7 p.m. July 18, nearly 12 hours after the incident began. At about 3:30 a.m. July 19, police set off tear gas in the house and took Hastings into custody.

Runyon is scheduled to make a first appearance in Clark County Superior Court at 9 a.m. Thursday.
