San Diego Harbor Police Chief Betty Kelepecz has been honored by the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives.

Kelepecz, 48, was named the Woman Law Enforcement Executive of the Year on Sunday at the group’s annual conference in Arlington, Va.

The award is sponsored by the national association and Motorola. It recognizes accomplished law enforcement executives who demonstrate leadership and creativity.

Kelepecz was named chief of the Harbor Police Department by the San Diego Unified Port District in July 2003. The department has 144 sworn officers and 29 civilian employees, and provides security at Lindbergh Field and law enforcement and firefighting services on San Diego Bay.

Kelepecz came to San Diego from Los Angeles, where she had served more than 23 years on the Los Angeles Police Department, her last six years as a commander.
