CHICAGO — A Chicago police sergeant on an emergency call was injured when his squad car collided with another vehicle at a South Side intersection last night, police said.

The accident occurred about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 71st Street and Stony Island Avenue in the city’s Grand Crossing neighborhood, Chicago Police Officer Amina Greer said.

The sergeant was westbound on 71st Street with the emergency lights of his squad car activated when a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix traveling north on Stony Island entered the intersection and slammed into the police car, Greer said.

The sergeant was taken to the University of Chicago Hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening, Greer said. The driver of the Pontiac, Darniele Burrell, 23, refused medical treatment at the scene.

Greer said Burrell told investigators he didn’t notice the lights and sirens until it was too late and “didn’t have time to stop.”

Burrell, of the 3400 block of West 84th Place, was cited with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, driving without insurance and damaging city property, Greer said.
