SILVER SPRING, Md. — A suspected impaired driver rear-ended a Maryland State Police trooper who was working traffic control in a highway construction zone, state police said.
The trooper was working enforcement inside a work zone area in the inner loop of I-495 with his emergency lights activated. State police said the driver of a Mercedes SUV, identified as Anthony Bowser, 31, drove into the construction zone and rear-ended the patrol vehicle. The trooper was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The trooper was taken to the hospital for injuries he received in the crash, state police said.
Bowser was transported to the hospital for unknown injuries. State police said speed and impairment are believed to be contributors to the crash and charges are pending in the outcome of the investigation.
“This crash highlights the dangers first responders and road crews face on a daily basis when working in a construction zone on a busy highway,” Maryland State Police said via Facebook.
