CHICO, Calif. — California Highway Patrol officers were unable to locate a speeding driver they chased for several miles Tuesday night on south Chico roadways.
The pursuit of the driver, in a black Mustang, began on Highway 99 near Neal Road, where CHP officers clocked the vehicle at 104 mph.
The car pulled off at Durham Pentz Road and headed west on Durham Dayton Highway, said CHP Sgt. Bruce Carpenter.
The driver sped toward Durham at nearly 100 mph, then ran a stop sign.
He proceeded toward Chico on the Midway, again at about 100 mph.
Butte County sheriff’s deputies laid down a spike strip at Midway and Hegan Lane, but the driver of the speeding Mustang swerved around it.
Carpenter said officers shut down the chase for public safety reasons as the vehicle entered the Chapmantown neighborhood.
The car was found abandoned at the corner of 17th Street and Humboldt Avenue, in front of the registered owner’s home.
She gave officers the name of the man who had been driving it, but a search for the subject turned up empty.
Carpenter said the CHP may seek an arrest warrant for the man believed to be behind the wheel.
