CUMBERLAND, R.I. — A police officer was stabbed and a suspect shot Saturday night behind Cumberland High School.
Police Chief John Desmarais on Sunday said no charges have been filed because this is an ongoing investigation that also involves the Rhode Island State Police and the Rhode Island Attorney General’s office.
Desmarais gave the following account of what happened.
A police officer was investigating a report of a suspicious person behind Cumberland High School before 8 p.m. Saturday. When the suspect ran, the officer followed him on foot.
Desmarais said the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed the officer in the thigh. The officer fired at the suspect. The chief said he isn’t sure how many shots were fired or where they hit the suspect.
Both the officer and the suspect were transported to Rhode Island Hospital, their conditions were not being released. However, Desmarais said the suspect’s injuries were not life-threatening.
The chief said the police will not release the names of the two until Monday at the earliest while the investigation continues.
