MADISON, Ind. — A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy responding to a domestic disturbance call was killed when the vehicle he was driving plunged off a steep embankment and crashed into a tree.
Indiana State Police say 35-year-old Roy B. Sutton Jr. of Hanover was killed in the Friday night crash near Madison.
Police say Sutton was one of three sheriff’s deputies responding to a report of a domestic disturbance involving weapons. Two of the deputies had just arrived when Sutton’s vehicle crashed nearby.
A preliminary investigation found Sutton’s vehicle ran off a hilly and winding road while apparently trying to avoid another vehicle. It went off the embankment and was airborne when it struck the tree.
Sutton had been a road deputy for 1 1/2 years and was married.
