MARION, Ohio — A police cruiser and a fire department ambulance crashed into each other while both vehicles were en route to the same emergency, the Marion Star reports.
The crash happened on Memorial Day involving a Marion Police Department SUV and a Marion Fire Department ambulance. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Marion Police Officer Daniel Ice, 51, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.
Troopers said the Ford F-550 ambulance was driven by Marion firefighter Jacob Fohl, 22. Both Fohl and firefighter Nicholas Hunley, who was a passenger in the ambulance, were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Preliminary investigation shows Fohl traveled into an intersection and was struck by Ice on the driver’s side of the ambulance, causing the ambulance to overturn and travel a short distance before coming to a rest on its side, troopers said.
Both vehicles were responding to a report of a drowning. The Marion Star reports the victim in the drowning incident was treated by EMS at the scene, and reported to be conscious and stable when he was transported to the hospital.
The crash remains under investigation.
