SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — A South Carolina man has died after his vehicle was hit by a truck speeding from a Charleston County sheriff’s deputy.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Cpl. Sonny Collins tells local media that the chase began about 6 p.m. Saturday when the deputy saw a truck ram another vehicle and speed off.

The deputy pursued the truck though Summerville and during the chase, the truck hit two other vehicles. The driver of one of them, 59-year-old Donald Ray Echols of Ladson, was killed while a passenger in the vehicle was injured.

Authorities charged 34-year-old Ronald Andrews of Cottageville with driving under the influence resulting in death, failure to stop for police and driving with a suspended license.

It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney to contact for comment.
