CHICAGO — Chicago Police seized more than $1 million in marijuana plants from a South Side home early Monday morning.

More than 200 marijuana plants and packages of the drug were discovered in the basement of the home in the 7400 block of South Lafayette Avenue, authorities said.

Some of the plants were as tall as six feet.

Officers executing a search warrant said inside the residence they found a “sophisticated and contained” operation that included an irrigation system, grow lights and duct work for ventilation.

The pot had to be transported in vans usually reserved for inmates, police said.

The male “target” of the investigation was not home at the time, but his identity is known, police said.

Two young girls were taken from the home, but their connection to the suspect was not immediately known.
