Job Description

Corrections Deputy DUTIES: Book prisoners brought in by Sheriff’s Deputies; State Patrol; Colville, Chewelah and/or Kettle Falls City Police and all other law enforcement agencies; maintain facility security; photograph and print prisoners, whenever necessary; maintain jail records; supervise inmate workers and inmate work details; attend to and visually check prisoners on a continual basis; make out monthly and yearly reports as requested; serve civil papers and warrants in the jail; type reports; testify in court; be responsible for feeding prisoners and guarding prisoners during time in court; successfully complete an Industrial First Aid Course during probationary period and maintain certification; work rotating shifts and other-than-normal work weeks; other related duties, as assigned. Use of lawful physical force, up to the employment of deadly force, may be required to subdue, control or apprehend combative inmates/suspects or to protect the life of oneself or others during the course of duties. Successfully complete the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission's Basic Corrections Academy (or equivalency) during the first six months of employment. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR JOB CLASSIFICATIONS: 1. Be at least 21 years old at time of appointment. 2. Sign a waiver agreeing to an investigation of your background by the Civil Service Commission and/or the Stevens County Sheriff's Office. 3. Have uncorrected vision of at least 20-40 in each eye, OR corrected to 20-20 and normal color vision. 4. Be a citizen of the United States and be able to read and write the English language. 5. Have graduated from high school or present a certificate of equivalency.

Stevens County Civil Service is in the process of establishing an eligibility list of candidates to fill current and future open Corrections Deputy positions in the Stevens County Jail.  To qualify for the list, you must timely submit all required forms/documents, pass physical ability testing, as well as written and oral exams.

Corrections Deputy is a full-time position with employer-paid training provided. Starting wage is $20.00/hr. with pay increases at 6 and 12 months (annually thereafter) plus generous benefits including medical & dental insurance, paid vacation, sick leave and paid holidays the first year.

  3. Schedule to have your Doctor’s Release Form signed as soon as possible; your doctor may require an appointment and charge you a fee.
  4. Prepare for physical ability testing.
  5. Submit a completed application, Doctor’s Release Form, non-refundable $25 test fee and driver’s license copy by 4:30 pm, Tuesday, February 1, 2022.
  6. Pass the physical ability test; take the written and oral exams.

All applicants should carefully consider the standards of excellence and integrity required before submitting an application.  Also, Stevens County administers the same physical ability testing as the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Academy; applicants are encouraged to review the physical test guidelines before starting a training regimen.
