Job Description

*Note* : We are seeking applicants who possess a Kansas Peace Officer’s license or out-of-state equivalent. Applicants who do not possess this license will not be considered at this time.**

Imagine crystal clear skies, windswept amber plains, rolling prairie thunderstorms and skylines as far as the eyes can see? Have you ever dreamed of working in law enforcement on the High Plains, walking in the footsteps of legendary figures such as Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson and John “Doc” Holliday? Does serving a strong, vibrant municipality, rich in history, culture and Midwestern values appeal to you? How about working in a community with a low cost of living, but provides some of the best benefits in the area?

Look no further than Liberal, Kansas. With the second-largest footprint located in the High Plains region of Southwest Kansas, our exciting community of 20,000+ is home to several major employers, highways and a dynamic, modern and progressive police department.  Just a half-day’s drive from major metropolitan and tourists centers of Amarillo, Texas, Colorado Springs and Denver, Colorado, Liberal PD currently employs 42 commissioned officers who serve in various divisions, including patrol, criminal investigations, narcotics and highway drug interdiction, Special Response Team, animal control, community relations, administration and more. We are actively seeking a diverse supervisor with qualifiable prior police leadership experience that can not only supplement our ranks, but can help us enhance our standing with our citizens, with whom we receive excellent support!  With a robust public relations program, community affairs department and new and exciting endeavors like our Crisis Incident Team program and Handle with Care program, we are looking for that special candidate who can lead a talented and driven group of men and women as a sergeant.

All lateral sergeant candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED and a valid driver's license as well as a Kansas peace officer's license or equivalent out-of-state peace officer's license - applicants without a valid peace officer's license will not be considered for this position.  College education and police training instructor experience is also strongly preferred. We are seeking to augment our staff with proven leaders to work to take an active role in one of our various divisions and units!

Why choose Liberal, Kansas?

We offer extremely competitive salaries, moving reimbursements, tuition assistance, free gym memberships and more. We value our employees with additional stipends for multilingual speakers, for those with college degrees and our military veterans. Our equipment is modern and top-of-the line, with a new patrol vehicle fleet, updated in-car computers and are upgrading our radio system.  Our pension is outstanding through Kansas Employees Retirement System with employer contributions exceeding 20%!

Our salary ranges are very competitive. Lateral transferring officers and police supervisors from another jurisdiction or out-of-state can expect a salary range of $51,168 to $72,800 (depending on qualifications and lengths of service).

We offer ample opportunities for expansion, growth, promotion and advancement within our ranks. We cannot wait to have you grow with us!
