This is a safety-sensitive position in the Police Department, exercising a high degree of trust and confidence, delivers emergency communication information, and receives calls and dispatches personnel and equipment for the purpose of providing public safety service and assistance to citizens. Employees in this classification must be able to exercise considerable judgment within established organizational values, policies, and procedures to provide for the safety of citizens, effective service delivery, and quality customer service. Monitors telephone and radio traffic in the communications center and responds to those needs. Answers incoming calls to ascertain the nature of the call, gathers information to relay to the appropriate personnel, and makes decisions as to the appropriate course of action from the information received. Assesses the nature of requests, attaches a priority to it, and takes the appropriate action by responding personally, dispatching emergency services personnel, or making the appropriate referral. Dispatches appropriate police and other emergency services to the scene of an incident in a timely manner, provides necessary information to police, citizens or other responders, and contacts all appropriate agencies, necessary personnel or backup personnel, as required for each incident. Monitors departmental and other alarms & responds appropriately. Monitors security cameras placed around the Police Department. When a commissioned officer has a prisoner in custody this position is responsible for monitoring the cameras, specifically to monitor the prisoner for the safety of the officer. Operates and monitors a CCIC/NCIC terminal. Processes checks for wanted persons, vehicle license plates, registration, driver’s license validity and criminal history as requested by field units. Sends and responds to administrative messages and confirmations. Sends emergency notification messages through a high-speed telephone emergency mass notification system. Performs various administrative functions to include faxing information, researching records management systems and calling for additional services as requested by field units. The Communications Section is staffed to maintain complete coverage 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. May compose and edit correspondence including but not limited to: administrative reports, memoranda or other material requiring judgment as to content, accuracy and completeness. Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Work hours will vary. Shift work required. Days, evenings, weekend and holiday hours will be required.

The full salary range for this position is: $24.31 /hour- $35.21/hour

Job Requirements

  • Age: 18
  • Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Experience: Two (2) years emergency dispatch experience preferred. Two (2) years of increasingly responsible related experience

Two (2) years emergency dispatch experience preferred. Two (2) years of increasingly responsible related experience to provide for the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Knowledge of computers and electronic data processing, and modern office practices and procedures. Knowledge of the Town's geography and street system in order to effectively assist officers and citizens. Skill in the operation of office, dispatch or other unique equipment. Ability to understand the principles of Community Policing and to integrate that philosophy into daily operations, duties and contact with the public. Ability to perform multiple tasks at relatively the same time. Ability to effectively communicate with a broad range of people through written or verbal communication. Must be able to understand and be understood when using a telephone or radio headset. Ability to function effectively and to take appropriate action in emergency situations. Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions. Ability to type 35 wpm accurately.
