This is a sworn, safety-sensitive position, exercising a high degree of discretion, trust, and confidence, performing skilled police work. The duties involve police patrol, criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, related law enforcement activities, and a wide variety of community services. Police Officers work in partnership with the community to identify and resolve issues of concern, provide public safety, service to the community in emergencies, and maintain peace, safety, and order. Police Officers must exercise considerable judgement, initiative, and skill in a variety of situations and must be able to act without direct supervision in completing work. Duties are carried out under established organizational values, policies, procedures, and the laws of the Town, the State of Colorado, and the United States of America.
- Patrols a designated area on an assigned shift; preserves law and order; prevent or discovers crime, apprehends criminals or offenders, and enforces traffic laws.
- Responds to a wide variety of issues, including traffic regulation activities, criminal investigations, first aid, prevention and detection of crime, arrest, maintenance of order, public service, and other issues.
- Applies knowledge, reason, and judgment to make prompt, effective decisions after evaluating alternative courses of action.
- Observes, listens, and analyzes activities in a wide variety of situations, and makes valid assessments of relevant issues, problems, and potential solutions.
- Communicates effectively with a wide variety of people, both verbally and in writing, under varied circumstances. Listens, understands, and resolves problems, and communicates assertively to bring control to a situation when required.
- Investigates gathers evidence, locates & interviews relevant persons, makes arrests when required, takes necessary police action, prepares reports & cases for prosecution, and testifies in court.
- Acts with sensitivity to the feelings of others, does not contribute to antagonism, interacts effectively with diverse groups, calms emotional people, acts courteously/respectfully, and uses good customer service skills.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships, works closely with others, accepts constructive criticism, learns & improves, corrects mistakes, and acts effectively as part of a team.
- Maintains self-control under stress, performs effectively, exercises restraint when verbally or physically abused, uses only necessary & reasonable force, and does not retaliate.
- Maintains a level of physical fitness, which meets all potential physical demands of policing and completing job responsibilities successfully.
- Regularly interacts with citizens to identify issues of concern, works together with them to resolve those concerns, facilitates community problem-solving, and takes enforcement action when appropriate.
- Involves members of the community in identifying issues, setting priorities, responding to concerns, and assessing the effectiveness of those responses.
- Performs public safety functions at community events that attract crowds, such as parades, fairs, and athletic events.
- Inspects and maintains police-related equipment, facilities, and uniforms to ensure proper function, use, and appearance; and
- Complies with all organizational values, policies, procedures, philosophies, and all verbal and written instructions and directives.
Other Job Duties:
- Coordinates activities with other officers, agencies, citizens, businesses, organizations, or groups to make efficient use of resources.
- Participates with others on work groups or committees to accomplish necessary additional tasks (i.e., F.T.O., K9, range officer, D.R.E., bicycle patrol, school resource officer, narcotics investigator, detective, administrative officer, business associations, neighborhood groups), and instructor level knowledge in law enforcement related skills; and
- Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

- Age: 21
- Education: Current Colorado POST Certificate. Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
- Experience: Must possess active level 1 POST certificate
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of -
- Modern police principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
- Human nature, human problems, and problem-solving methods.
Ability to -
- Possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License.
· Read and write the English language effectively.
- Follow both verbal and written instructions, directives, and the ability to issue clear concise verbal and written instructions, and report operations both verbally, and in written form to supervisors.
- Communicate, solve problems, and ability to pass all phases of the selection process for a Police Officer.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of people.
- React quickly and calmly while under stress.
- Learn geographical locations, report forms, procedures, report management systems, and methods necessary for police work.
- Function effectively over a long period of time and under a variety of conditions.
- Perform multiple tasks at relatively the same time; and
- Perform work, which occasionally requires good physical conditioning.
Skilled in –
Using equipment necessary for police work, such as police car, radio, radar, laser, handgun, Taser, shotgun, rifle, and other weapons as required; emergency equipment, handcuffs, pager, cellular phone, personal computer, various computer software packages, first aid equipment, bicycle, and other equipment as assigned.
