Job Description

The City of Newark, Delaware, a professionally managed, growing university community, seeks those interested in the position of police officer.

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, possess an Associate’s degree or its equivalent (minimum 60 credits) from a recognized college or university OR 30 credits with military service (defined as serving 2+ years of a commitment with the commitment being defined as either 3+ years of active duty or 6+ years of guard or reserve service; honorable discharge and/or enlistment documentation required), have a valid driver’s license with no recent suspension, have no felony convictions, meet pre-employment assessment requirements and be a U.S. citizen. Certified police officers are exempt from the education requirement.

This is a rewarding career opportunity which offers an excellent salary and fringe benefit program. Starting salary for a Newark police officer is $60,159 while attending the police academy and through the end of the first year of service.

The salary rises to $61,895 after completion of one year of service. Salary range tops out at over $104,000 per year without being promoted to a higher rank.

Applicants are eligible for a $10,000 hiring bonus for certified officers and $5,000 for non-certified.

Newark PD has many special units including detectives, street crimes, SWAT, crisis negotiations, evidence detection (CSI), traffic unit (motors) and more.

Applicants will undergo an extensive screening process which includes a written test and physical exam, oral interview, background investigation (minimum education credits must be completed by the start of the background investigation), polygraph test, physical examination and psychological evaluation.

Benefits include health & dental for employee with no contribution. Participation in the State of Delaware County/Municipal Police Pension Plan, which provides for retirement after 20 years of service.
