1. Where did your company name originate from?

The company name has changed several times since the company's inception in 1968.  Initially known as Desk Top File Co., founder Frank Potter later changed the name to Filing Systems Inc. "Datum" was added in 1983 to reflect the growth of products.

The term datum is defined as a starting point or piece of information. When a client is looking to store something, whether that be weapons, evidence, tech, files or people (yes, Datum manufactures desks), Datum is there from the start. The relationship begins by defining the storage need and designing the best possible solution for the client and space. Then, Datum moves on to manufacturing quality steel products.

2. What was the inspiration behind starting your company?

Frank Potter started the company in the basement of the family's Long Island home. He was a great entrepreneur and inventor, a trait he passed on to his four sons, who own and operate the business today. Potter had several inventions that never took off, including a coffee dispenser that screwed onto instant coffee jars and dispensed exactly one teaspoon of coffee.

The family's success began with a small indexable phone number storage file Potter manufactured by hand in the basement. According to Steve Potter, Tom and he worked in the basement with their father for 50 cents an hour – "maybe a dollar?"

A year or so later, Frank Potter saw a need to store green bar printer paper. He invented a system to hold the paper in book form and a mobile storage cart to store and easily retrieve the printout paper books. He called it the PBF Cart. The cart initially was manufactured by a company in Connecticut, but, eventually, he started manufacturing the products himself in a small two-employee shop in New York. The PBF Cart is the product that launched the growth of the company.

Over 50 years later, Datum is still owned and operated by the Potter family. Thanks to customer loyalty and a commitment to quality, Datum outgrew its original New York facility and moved to York, Pennsylvania, in 1992. Datum's team of in-house engineers, designers and skilled craftsmen have manufactured storage solutions for over 40,000 companies worldwide.

3. What is your signature product and how does it work?

Datum's lines of products span industries and applications, but the company is best known for high-density storage. Datum's MobileTrak systems can more than double a space's storage capacity and have been installed worldwide, from armories and military facilities to museums and national parks. The MobileTrak systems are compatible with many of Datum's product lines, including weapon storage and filing systems.

4. Why do you believe your products are essential to the police community?

Datum understands storage is about more than just a place to put things. Operational readiness is critical for military, police and first responders. The weapons, gear and supplies they rely on to do their jobs need to be secure, durable and ready to go without notice.

Datum's products are designed to meet the needs of the people who use them every day. That knowledge comes from years of experience and years of listening and tweaking the smallest detail. Datum knows when time and efficiency matter; it is the details that make the difference.

An example is the G2 Weapon Rack, the latest addition to Datum's line of weapon storage. The newly designed barrel saddle has a sling retention feature to prevent snagging. The careful design makes weapon retrieval quicker and safer, and prevents damage to the weapon or weapon attachments.

5. What makes your company unique?

Datum engineers, designs and manufactures every product with high-quality, environmentally-friendly materials and processes under one roof in York, Pennsylvania. As a family-owned business, Datum takes great pride in the quality of products produced, which is why every product that leaves the factory is backed by an exclusive Lifetime Warranty – the best in the industry.

6. What do your customers like best about you and your products?

Datum believes understanding a client's storage need is just as important as manufacturing quality products. Datum has over 50 years of experience and employees with industry-related knowledge who understand each market's overall and specific challenges. Datum works hand in hand with the client to design storage solutions that meet the current need, while offering the flexibility to grow and adapt to future needs.

7. What is the most rewarding part of serving the first responder community?

It means a lot to know a well-thought-out design can make a positive difference in the day of an individual who works so hard to serve and protect his or her community.

8. Do you support any charitable organization within public safety or the community? Tell us more.

Absolutely! Datum understands how important it is to give back. Datum supports various organizations in the local community, including the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association (PCPA). Datum is also proud to sponsor the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) and National Police Week through the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) because of their missions to support the law enforcement communities.
