The company's main focus is to reduce law enforcement firearms accidents and increase the effectiveness of current training
Company Name: Smart Firearms Training Devices
Headquarters: Tempe, Arizona
- Where did your company name originate from?
Our mission is to replace inert training devices with smart, yet durable devices that actively communicate crucial information to instructors. The name represents patented smart technology incorporated with the device’s purpose: firearms training.
- What was the inspiration behind starting your company?
Simply to reduce law enforcement firearms accidents and increase the effectiveness of current training. Having a background in an industry which is extremely risk averse, I found it troubling that the same firearms accidents kept repeating themselves in law enforcement. It made me search for the reason and I found a large part was due to low quality training weapons. I found the worst of these training weapons actually caused training scars which were causing accidents and costing lives in the field.
- What is your signature product and how does it work?
Our signature product is our unintentional discharge sensor suite. All of our training weapons are built around this feature.
- Why do you believe your products are essential to your vertical (Police, Fire, EMS, Corrections, Government) community?
Firearms accidents devastate lives, ruin reputations, and can cost millions of dollars. Smart Firearms Training Devices offers an effective yet inexpensive solution and can make many of these accidents a thing of the past.
- What has been the biggest challenge your company has faced?
We struggle to convince police chiefs and city councils to be part of the solution and to listen when their trainers recommend replacing $40 rubber training guns with smart devices that cost $200 dollars or more. Of course, this cost is minor when we are talking about avoiding firearms accidents. Unfortunately, an accident is too often what it takes to make the case for smart training devices.
- What makes your company unique?
We develop good working relationships with the trainers at large metropolitan police departments, spending time working with them and listening to their issues and concerns. This feedback and input is crucial to the development of our training weapons. We don’t just develop products. We seek to solve problems for our customers.
- What do your customers like best about you and your products?
The instructors consider our guns a force multiplier. With Smart Firearms, they can spot bad habits from across the room or when they were looking somewhere else.
- What is the most rewarding part of serving the first responder/local government community?
We hear the obstacles the community faces and we also get to hear how our products made a difference, in improving training and preventing accidents.
- Do you support any charitable organizations within public safety/community?
We donate to the US Deputy Sheriff’s Association. The USDSA provides training and equipment to departments who cannot afford it in addition to providing assistance to the families of fallen officers. We also support various Police Explorer programs.
- Is there any fun fact or trivia that you’d like to share with our users about you or your company?
Our Director of Sales, Arno Lippassaar, is the only two-time recipient of the Brummer Award for Heroic acts in the line of duty during his career as a NYS Trooper. He will hate that we shared this but we as a company are very proud of Arno.
- What’s next for your company? Any upcoming new projects or initiatives?
We are currently rolling out a CEW training weapon to fit the TASER X2 Holster. This is in addition to an M4 Patrol rifle rolled out in September. Our current big project, which is nearing completion, is a SIG Sauer 320.
