1. What was the inspiration behind starting your company?
As a third generation spectroscopist and inventor, Dylan Wilks gained inspiration from the opportunities of unmet analytical needs. When he founded the company, he joined forces with a team of curious, innovative, customer-focused experts united by the singular purpose of developing easy-to-use versions of lab-grade analytical instrumentation. Today, our customers can confidently make data-driven decisions on-site with the information our instruments provide.
2. What is your signature product and how does it work?
LightLab Cannabis Analyzer is the first portable instrument that uses HPLC technology to accurately quantify cannabinoids, including THC and CBD, in cannabis plants and product. HPLC technology is what forensic laboratories typically use to analyze cannabis. Unlike lab-based technology, LightLab is ruggedized, portable and designed for the non-technical user. An onboard touchscreen guides the user step-by-step enabling them to measure 11+ cannabinoids in over 9 sample types. Portable and tough, LightLab combines liquid chromatography, which separates the cannabinoids with spectroscopy and uses light to analyze the sample's compounds and multi-dimensional nonlinear regression to calculate sample results. The user can share results via text message, email or export them as an image, PDF or spreadsheet.
3. Why do you believe your products are essential to the police community?
With cannabis legalization on the rise, it is imperative that law enforcement personnel have access to the necessary tools to uphold the law. LightLab 3 Law Enforcement (LE) version gives officers the tools they need to easily differentiate between hemp and adult-use cannabis, on-site, accurately. With this information, it is possible to rapidly verify documentation (i.e., COA), execute warrants, seize illicit products while avoiding compliant products and augmenting forensic testing throughput.
4. What makes your company unique?
Orange Photonics is the first company to refine a laboratory based analytical tool - High Performance Liquid Chromatography - for a portable format and for non-technical users. LightLab is the only portable instrument that accurately quantifies the chemical composition in cannabis plants and products. Customer care is our highest priority, as we ensure that each of them are given the resources and attention they need to be successful.
5. What do your customers like best about you and your products?
Our customers value the care they receive from our Customer Care and Technical Support teams. From on-boarding to routine check-in calls, our teams help maintain valuable relationships with our customers that strengthen their experience with both our company and instrumentation. The technology that Orange Photonics provides to our customers has helped them improve their operations and better meet their goals.
6. What is the most rewarding part of serving the first responder community?
It is rewarding to deliver a technology that solves an unmet testing need. As an analytical instrumentation company, the accuracy of the data we provide helps law enforcement agencies support their communities, do their jobs and, in the same capacity, support compliant businesses.
7. Do you support any charitable organizations within public safety or the community? Tell us more.
We are proud to live in New Hampshire and like to give back to those who need it most in our community. Orange Photonics organized a donation drive, "Socks of Love," collecting clothing for our houseless community. In the end, we donated over 200 pairs of socks and underwear to New Horizons in Manchester, N.H.
8. Is there any fun fact or trivia that you'd like to share about you or your company?
We use the same technology in the LightLab Cannabis Analyzer as NASA used in the Mars Curiosity rover! Curiosity has been on Mars since August 2012 and is still operational today.
9. What's next for your company? Any upcoming new projects or initiatives?
Orange Photonics invests heavily in research and development to ensure our capabilities stay ahead of the marketplace. We take great care to build strong customer relationships and expand our customer experience.
