Interviewing in Sexual Assault Investigations

In a sexual assault investigation the law enforcement investigator’s mental approach should be to determine if a crime was or wasn’t committed. The law enforcement profession brings about situations where their contacts with individuals in their community sets-up scenarios where the investigator interviews those they come in contact with. Interviewing is taught at the basic police academy and continues into the field training program and once the investigator is assigned to patrol or the detective division. Interviewing is the backbone of law enforcement investigative protocol and procedures in order to obtain information about what transpired between the parties. If the investigator is incapable of interviewing individuals in a competent, thorough, completed, and intelligent manner, the ability to understand what took place in an event maybe compromised. Therefore, investigators need to obtain the necessary and needed education and training in order to reach a level of competence. The investigators credibility as a law enforcement officer will be questioned if the interview protocol, procedure, and process are not followed. If the credibility and reliability of the interview is questionable then a sexual offender may be released back into the community and/or an innocent person can be sent to jail/prison for a crime he/she didn’t commit. In this video Lawrence W. Daly, Chief Sexual Assault Investigative Educator for the One Daly Corporation raises several issues surrounding the concerns of identification in a sexual assault investigation.
