Jotto Desk is your total vehicle accessories provider specializing in heavy-duty, customizable equipment
Jotto Desk has been the benchmark Total Solutions Provider for vehicle equipment in public safety and the leading innovator of vehicle laptop mounts and docking stations for mobile workforces.
Company Name: Jotto Desk
Headquarters: Rogers, AR
Signature Product: Heavy-duty, customizable vehicle equipment
1. Where did your company name originate from?
Our first product back in 1994 that started this whole thing was a writing desk, meant to jot down addresses, license plate numbers, etc. So, a jotting desk morphed into Jotto Desk and the rest is history.
2. What was the inspiration behind starting your company?
The owner of our company was an acquaintance of a local deputy sheriff, Sam Owen. Sam mentioned that he'd invented a method to keep all of his important items secured and accessible. Sam had taken a section of tailpipe, splayed the bottom and top, had it bent and bolted to the transmission hump. On the top section, he had affixed a plexi-glass desk of sorts that he'd covered with Velcro, attaching a calendar for court dates, notebook for jotting down information, a couple of pens and a calculator.
Our parent company is Assembled Products Corporation and their motto is "Products that make life better". As a result, the owner saw a niche need and decided to move forward with Owen’s invention as a product. Shortly after entering the market, we realized that the industry was moving toward laptops and the product morphed and expanded into no-holes computer mounts as well.
3. What is your signature product and how does it work?
While our No Holes Computer Mounts were really our first entry into the public safety market, Jotto Desk really gained a name with our introduction and release of the Contour Console line. Previously, all equipment consoles were basically metal boxes mounted between the seats. Some were flat and some had a slope to them, that was it. The Contour Console line was the first console invented to interface with the OEM dash structure of the vehicle, have a vertical orientation and utilize unused space underneath the dash to help with mounting deep radios. This design allowed for safer viewing and interaction by the driver and freed up room between the seats for comfort, ergonomics and easier access to vertically-mounted weapons.
In late 2009, Jotto Desk acquired Patriot Products to enter the Prisoner Containment aspect of the public safety market. The partitions that we inherited were pretty much the same as what was being offered across the industry. Back then, the Crown Vic Police Interceptor was king and had been basically the exact same vehicle for many, many years. When the 2011 Dodge Charger PPV was released we realized that space was quickly becoming a luxury. If we did the partition for this vehicle the same as we had done for the Crown Vic, we would be in a dilemma: either give maximum room for the driver and no room for a prisoner or take room away from the driver so there was additional room for a prisoner.
Due to this dilemma, the Space Creator Partition line was conceived and brought to market. Our design required a partition frame re-design to provide maximum room for the driver, and features a Bi-directional Recessed Housing (BDRH). The BDRH recesses in two directions. First it recesses back into the prisoner area over the transmission hump area to allow more room for mounting vertical gun racks. Then it recesses forward behind the front passenger seat to create more leg/knee/foot room for a prisoner. Since our introduction of the Space Creator line of partition, others have followed suit and it has become the new standard.
4. Why do you believe your products are essential to your vertical (Police, Fire, EMS, Corrections, Government) community?
The great thing about Jotto Desk is that we recognize that a public safety vehicle is somebody's office for their entire 8-10 hour shift. Everything we do is with that mindset. Our goal is to provide products that enhance their interactions, whatever they might be. Something as simple as the way a microphone is secured is just as important as making sure the weapon secured in a gun rack is readily accessible when needed.
5. What has been the biggest challenge your company has faced?
Externally, the biggest challenge is changes to vehicles. Some years the changes are minimal and do not really affect any of our products. Other years, the changes are numerous and every product that we offer requires a total re-design – no small task when we offer 11 product categories.
The internal challenge is to keep working daily with the same mindset as when we were only a computer mount company: putting the customer first, trying to find ways to improve solutions and not being satisfied with a "we've always done it this way, so it must be right" mindset.
6. What makes your company unique?
Jotto Desk has positioned itself as the only Total Solutions Provider in the marketplace, which goes beyond just having a lot of products that can be sold in the LE market:
It is having products that fit the vehicle as designed.
It is having products that work together seamlessly.
It is having products that all ship together at the same time.
It is having products that ship quickly.
It is having one company that you can turn to if issues arise.
It is having confidence that all products will ship fast, will ship together, will get there quickly, will install easily and will fit together with no issues.
7. What do your customers like best about you and your products?
Two things I believe separate Jotto Desk: Fit and finish and ease of installation. Many years ago, prior to coming to Jotto Desk in 2000, a friend that owned an upfit company gave me some advice: design your products with both the officer and the installer in mind. We've kept that advice in mind over the past 20 years as we've added products and expanded our offerings. First of all, we want products that solve problems –not create them – and are easily usable by the officer. “Good enough” is not good enough. We utilize OEM CAD to design our products and strive for solutions that fit. Secondly, we want products that are easy to install. With the number of products normally installed in a modern police vehicle, saving the install team 30-45 minutes per item adds up over the course of the install. Saving time equals saving money.
8. What is the most rewarding part of serving the first responder/local government community?
I think knowing that our products are vital equipment helping law enforcement do their job and make their day safer and easier is the most rewarding aspect. No two departments are the same. They all have their own unique needs and challenges. We work with those agencies to find solutions that solve those challenges.
9. Is there any fun fact or trivia that you’d like to share with our users about you or your company?
We are located in NW Arkansas - home of Walmart, Tyson Foods and JB Hunt. Our owner Bill Sage used to frequent a local donut shop popular with Sam Walton of Walmart fame. This is where Bill and Sam first met, became donut buddies and where Jotto Desk was born.
10. What’s next for your company? Any upcoming new projects or initiatives?
Jotto Desk is a unique company that never wants to stand pat and satisfied. We are always exploring new opportunities to expand our footprint or improve current solutions
