Weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) continue to be an ongoing threat for first responders working to protect their communities. And with an ever-increasing range of threats, first responders are forced to elevate response efforts – and with that comes additional training and equipment.

WMD-detection equipment is essential to keeping communities safe, as the faster agencies can identify the threat, the faster they can mitigate it. First responders use this equipment to detect chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive (CBRNE) threats – all of which can cause substantial loss of life.

The best approach for identifying any hazard is to have several different methods of detection. For example, if you are trying to detect or verify ammonia is present, you may decide to use a multi-gas meter with a photoionization detector (PID), handheld meter with an ammonia sensor, pH paper for corrosivity, and a colorimetric tube to back up the previous findings. All have limitations but together they provide responders with good information.

If you are preparing to invest in WMD-detection equipment, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed. Fortunately, there are resources to help you through the process. This Police1 guide to WMD-detection equipment is a starting point for the purchasing process.
