POTSDAM, N.Y. The northern New York man who shot a state trooper before being killed by the trooper had served prison times for a pair of sex crimes.

That’s according to the Watertown Daily Times. The newspaper reports that 45-year-old Steven McUmber was deemed a Level Three sex offender after being convicted of raping a 13-year-old girl in the late 1980s and pleading guilty to other sex-related charges a decade later.

Yesterday, McUumber was shot and killed after he wounded a trooper in the shoulder during a domestic dispute at the Saint Lawrence County home where he lived.

Trooper Amanda Reif who had recently returned from maternity leave is in serious condition at the hospital in Burlington, Vermont.

State police officials say she was shot after she responded to McUmber’s residence in the town of Potsdam. Authorities say Reif shot McUmber after he emerged from the home and moved aggressively toward other police officers.
