State Police Helicopter to Check Motorists’ Speeds

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A State Police helicopter will soon patrol for speeders on interstate highways.

The helicopter will be used weather permitting starting Friday, said State Police Superintendent Howard Hill. The helicopter will be assigned to areas prone to speeding, he said.

The state Division of Highways has painted a series of five white blocks on the sides of interstates so speeds can be checked from the helicopter. Officers on the ground would then stop speeders. Troopers also will check motorists for seat-belt use.

Helicopter patrols were eliminated several years ago because of high fuel costs.

“If it gets into my budget, I’ll cut (it) back,” Hill said Monday.
