KALAMAZOO, MICH. — A beer made in honor of a slain Kalamazoo police officer will benefit the foundation that bears his name, helping to educate and train future or current law enforcement officers.

Boatyard Brewing Co.’s EZ Ale was released at Kalamazoo Beer Exchange on Saturday, the same day as an annual memorial run for Officer Eric Zapata. The 35-year-old died in a shootout April 18, 2011, as he and other officers answered a report of shots fired.

Zapata was a 10-year veteran of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety with three children. The Eric Zapata Memorial Foundation offers scholarships for area students to pursue law enforcement careers and training for those already on the job.
