INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- More than $100,000 has been raised for the 7-year-old daughter of a police officer who was killed last month by a rampaging gunman, organizers said.

Most of the money has been raised from sales of $5 decals with an image of police shield with Patrolman Timothy Laird’s badge number.

“It’s dramatically more than what we thought we’d raise,” said Christopher Bailey, a city patrolman and one of Laird’s friends. “I am surprised and overwhelmed by the generosity of the community, but I’ve always known there’s people that would do anything to help another.”

Laird, 31, was killed early Aug. 18 by a gunman who sprayed a neighborhood on the city’s south side with bullets from an assault rifle after authorities said he fatally shot his mother. Another officer shot and killed the gunman, who police said had a history of mental problems.

Laird is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and their daughter, Kaylee.

An enlarged version of the decal has been placed on a stock car that was running in a nationally televised ARCA race in Toledo, Ohio, Friday night.

Driver Robbin Slaughter and the operators of Locke Motorsports, based in Beech Grove, knew Laird, and thought it would be a good way to draw attention to the fund.

On one of the back panels of the car are the words “Kaylee Laird Trust Fund” along with the phone number where people can call to find information on how to donate.

“We’re going to run the decal this weekend, and again at Salem Speedway later this month, and I want to head home knowing that we got every last cent we could for the family,” Slaughter said. “They deserve it.”
