SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - The city’s police chief has been disciplined for bringing a gun into the department jail where firearms are banned.
Alan Rodbell has received a letter of reprimand from the city manager for violating department policy when he brought his service-issued .40-caliber Glock with him while running after two officers who were responding to trouble Dec. 10 at police headquarters.
Rodbell has been chief for two years and deputy chief for one year.
He said it’s the first time he’s received discipline in 29 years of police work, except for being involved in traffic collisions.
Failure to comply with department policy of not bringing firearms in detention facilities could result in “disciplinary action up to and including a reprimand, salary reduction, demotion, combination thereof, or dismissal,” City Manager Jan Dolan wrote in a letter to Rodbell.
Guns are supposed to be locked up before entering portions of the jail, according to department general orders.
