Chicago Cop Makes Surprise Delivery; Baby OK

Chicago Tribune

A Chicago police officer is in line for a department commendation after he delivered a baby and possibly saved its life early this morning in a home on Chicago’s South Side.

Officer Phillip Campbell, an evidence technician, was on his way to an investigation about 2:25 a.m. when he was flagged down by a man on the 400 block of West Marquette Road.

The man’s wife was in labor in their apartment nearby. Campbell rushed inside and found the woman already delivering a baby boy in distress.

“The baby’s head was sticking out, and the (umbilical) cord was wrapped around the neck,” Campbell said. “I was able to get some of it away from the neck, and I asked her to give one final push. She did. The baby just came right out.”

Paramedics soon arrived and took the mother and baby to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, where they were reported in good condition.

The parents named the child Kemani Phillip James, after the officer.
