A man was hospitalized in critical condition today after he allegedly tried to run down several people, including a Cicero police officer, and was shot, WGN-Ch. 9 reported.

The incident began Sunday afternoon when Cicero police spotted a van nearly run over people on the street in the western suburb.

Cicero police pursued the van into Chicago, and one of the officers approached the vehicle on foot at 27th Street and Lawndale Avenue on the city’s West Side, WGN reported.

The motorist allegedly tried to strike the officer with his van and was shot by the officer’s partner. The driver was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital.

No charges had been filed as of this morning.

Members of the Illinois State Police are investigating whether the Cicero officers acted properly in the incident.
