[DeKalb County, GA]

Police1 Staff Report
(DEKALB COUNTY, Ga.) -- The Homicide unit of the DeKalb County Police Department continues its hunt for the person or persons who shot and killed DeKalb County Sheriff-elect Derwin Brown in front of his home on Dec. 15.

He was due to be sworn in today, according to Mildred W. Jones, public information officer for the DeKalb County Department of Public Safety.

At about 11:23 p.m. Brown was shot multiple times by what family describe as sounding like a large caliber weapon. Brown, who rose to the rank of captain over 22 years on the force, was returning from a restaurant where he was celebrating his recent graduation from sheriff’s training school. He recently defeated incumbent Sidney Dorsey 2 to 1 in the election for county sheriff.

“I don’t want to see anybody getting away with this, and that’s the way all of us feel,” he said. “He was one of us,” Lt. J.W. Austin of DeKalb County Police told the Associated Press.

Jones said that police are not commenting on any of the details of the case, but are offering $45,000 to anyone with information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case.

The funeral has been scheduled for Thursday, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Church at 1 p.m.

Details are forthcoming on a memorial fund for Brown’s wife and five children.
