Man Killed, 2 Okla. City Officers Hurt During Shootout

Oklahoma City (AP) -- One person was killed and four people, including two police officers, were wounded in a shootout outside a south-side bar early Sunday, authorities said.

Police responded to a call around 12:18 a.m. at the Rio Bravo Bar about a man who had left the bar but returned with a gun in his trousers.

As three officers approached the bar, they were confronted in the parking lot by the man, the police department said in a news release.

The man exchanged shots with police, hitting officers Brian Bennett in the chest area and Chad Vontungeln in the arm.

Bennett was protected by body armor and was treated and released from a local hospital. Vontungeln was treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound to the arm and was later released, police said.

Officer Kenneth Lile, who also responded, wasn’t injured.

A man inside the bar was hit in the arm and a woman in the parking lot was shot. Both were treated and released from a local hospital. Their names weren’t released and it wasn’t clear who shot them.

The alleged shooter, identified only as a Hispanic male in his early 30s, died at the scene, police said.

The officers were placed on routine administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an investigation.
