Utah Motor Officer Ron Wood, an 8-year veteran of the West Jordan Police Department was killed by a 17-year-old suspect who was wanted for questioning in an earlier domestic assault and for a string of robberies, early Tuesday morning.
Officer Wood responded to the call on the domestic, observed the suspect in the area and gave pursuit of the suspect on foot. The pursuit entered a small neighborhood park. As Wood entered the park, he was shot in the head by the suspect.
The suspect then fled, carjacking one vehicle and then attempting to carjack another. The second vehicle was driven by another West Jordan Police Officer in plain clothes. He was wearing a vest identifying himself as a police officer.
The suspect raised his weapon and fired on this officer, who returned fire. The suspect then turned the gun on himself and commited suicide.
Officer Wood was assigned to the Traffic Unit and was a motor officer. He is survived by his wife of just a year-and-a-half.
