(BRIDGETON, Missouri) -- Michael J. McCarthy Sr., a retired detective with the Bridgeton Police Department, died Jan. 14, 2001, of complications from heart attacks and a stroke at his home in St. Charles. He was 58 and a native of St. Louis.

Mr. McCarthy served the Police Department for 28 years. He spent his last 15 years on the force as a juvenile detective, serving as a liaison between the department and the juvenile court system.

Mr. McCarthy often volunteered his spare time to work with the youths he met on the job. He earned numerous commendations and received the Corrigan-Wiesman Special Partnership Award from the St. Louis County Juvenile Justice Association.

He also was a member of the Major Case Squad.

Before working in Bridgeton, he was a reserve officer with the Kirkwood Police Department.

After his retirement in 1998, he volunteered with the James S. McDonnell United Service Organization at Lambert Field.

He was a past president of the Missouri Police Juvenile Officers Association and St. Louis County Juvenile Justice Association.

In the 1960s, he served briefly in the Air Force.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, 7230 Dale Avenue, Richmond Heights. Mr. McCarthy donated his body to St. Louis University.

Among survivors are his wife, Kathy Feeherty McCarthy of St. Charles; a daughter, Jennifer L. Rahn of St. Charles; a son, Michael J. McCarthy Jr. of St. Charles; a sister, Peggy Keen of Maplewood; a brother, John McCarthy of Kirkwood; and two granddaughters.
