The New York Times -- A plainclothes police sergeant shot and critically wounded a Brooklyn man early yesterday morning after the man pointed a revolver at the officer while trying to evade him, the authorities said.
The man, Owen Dwyer of Wingate, was in critical condition last night at Kings County Hospital Center, the authorities said.
The sergeant, Shaun Kelly, and Officer Carlos Luis were on patrol near East 51st Street and Clarkson Avenue around 5 a.m. when they saw Mr. Dwyer drinking a beer on the street, the police said.
As the officers approached to issue Mr. Dwyer a summons for public drinking, he started running, the police said. Both officers gave chase, and while he ran, Mr. Dwyer pulled a .357 revolver from his waistband, they said.
Moments later, Mr. Dwyer stopped and aimed his gun at the sergeant, who fired one shot, apparently missing him, the police said.
The chase resumed, and Mr. Dwyer pointed his gun again at the officers, they said. The sergeant fired a second shot, striking Mr. Dwyer in the torso, the police said.
Mr. Dwyer, who was on probation for weapons offenses, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, and possessing an open container of alcohol, the police said.
