Tulsa, Okla. (AP) -- A police officer shot and injured a Tulsa man Thursday after he allegedly threatened police with a knife, police said.

Sgt. Tommy Terneus shot Allen Lee Locust, 42, early Thursday morning outside a Tulsa apartment complex, police spokesman Scott Walton said.

A woman had flagged Terneus down just after 5 a.m. and asked that he protect her while she retrieved items from an apartment, Walton said.

Locust then came out of the apartment, approaching Terneus with a knife that he refused to put down, Walton said. Terneus fired once.

Walton said Locust was taken to St. John Medical Center, but the hospital said it had no patient by that name.

Terneus was not placed on administrative leave because Locust survived the gunshot, Walton said. The case has been sent to the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges should be filed against Locust.
