Omaha Police Involved in Fatal Shooting

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Police fatally shot a man in south Omaha following a pursuit Thursday night.

The shooting happened about 6:30 p.m. CST, Police Chief Don Carey said.

The incident began when undercover narcotics officers planned to meet two men at a bar. One man went into the bar and was arrested, but the other drove off and was followed by cruiser officers until the Omaha police helicopter took over the pursuit, Carey said.

The man drove to the area of 30th and Madison Street, exited the car and fled on foot when he was confronted by three officers, Carey said.

“Shots were fired and the suspect was killed,” he said.

The names of the dead man and the officers involved were not being released Thursday night.

“This points out police work is difficult, and officers put their lives on the line all the time,” Carey said.

The police helicopter videotaped the incident, and officers were reviewing the tape Thursday night, said Officer Meg Fricke.

The incident happened as many residents were getting home from work.

John White said he knew something was going on when he heard the police helicopter hovering overhead.

“All of a sudden you hear five, six shots real quick,” White said.

Another said the neighborhood has changed in recent years.

“It’s a tough place to live,” Bob Hazuka said.
