Two police officers shot at Charles Dilliard after he pointed a rifle at one of the officers, police said.
The shooting happened at an apartment complex off Birdwell Court after a woman asked police to help her get her personal belongings from her estranged husbands apartment.
“Repeatedly asked him to drop his weapon and he refused to do it,” Portland Police Chief Al West said.
Four shots were fired. At least one bullet struck Dilliard and killed him, West said.
Last year, officers were called to the coupleis apartment on a domestic complaint.
It was the first time Portland police officers have ever fired upon a suspect.
