Kansas authorities shot and killed an Englewood man and a Utah woman wanted in connection with a homicide after the pair led them on a high-speed chase Wednesday afternoon.
The incident happened on Interstate 70 near Hays.
Law enforcement officers there said Aaron Millenson, 18, and Alicia Cardall, 26, were wanted for questioning in the shooting death of an 80-year-old World War II veteran at his home in Holladay, Utah.
Officers said they attempted to stop the couple on the freeway, but they sped away. The chase ended when their car crashed into a concrete bridge support.
When officers approached the smashed car, shots were fired from the vehicle, police said. Officers from the Kansas Highway Patrol and Ellis County Sheriff’s Office fired back, killing Millenson and Cardall.
“This is a private matter,” said Millenson’s father, Steve, when contacted Thursday.
Millenson was wanted on a $50,000 warrant for violating his probation in a June 2004 burglary case. According to an arrest affidavit, Millenson broke into a neighbor’s home and stole electronic equipment and three guns.
As part of his probation, he was not to leave his home between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Last month, he violated those terms and a warrant was issued, according to court documents.
Also during his probation, Millenson attempted to buy a gun, which was not permitted, court records show.
Authorities in Utah wanted to talk to Millenson and Cardall about the fatal shooting of Steven Poulos on Jan. 14.
Investigators believe Poulos was killed after he placed a for-sale ad for his 1997 Subaru Legacy. The car was missing when his body was discovered.
Poulos was on the beaches of Normandy, where he was wounded five times. He earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star Medal, among other commendations.
