(LOS ANGELES) -- A man driving a stolen truck eluded police after a short high-speed pursuit Monday, officials said.

Police, California Highway Patrol officers and sheriff’s deputies searched unsuccessfully for the suspect in northern Thousand Oaks.

The red Dodge pick-up truck, reported stolen days earlier, was spotted by a Simi Valley Police Department officer shortly after 9:30 a.m. traveling west on the Ronald Reagan Freeway near First Street.

''The officer recognized the vehicle from an earlier report,’' said Lt. Neal Rein of the Simi Valley Police Department. ''The vehicle had been stolen in Simi Valley.’'

Rein said the officer was some distance away and gave chase as the suspect reached speeds as fast as 100 mph. Police lost sight of the truck near Tierra Rejada Road.

Assisting in the pursuit, CHP officers spotted a red truck traveling at a high speed and attempted to follow it in an area of citrus orchards near Moorpark and Read roads, between Moorpark and Thousand Oaks.

Officials speculated that the truck may have traveled into hills along the Moorpark Freeway.

A brief, unsuccessful search for the suspect was conducted by police, CHP officers and sheriff’s deputies near Olsen, Moorpark and Read roads. A canine unit was called to help, but the request was canceled before the unit arrived.

''We did a preliminary search around the area,’' Rein said. ''He just got away from us.’'
