NORMAN- When Norman police decided to search a northeast residence for drugs last week, they believed they might find some marijuana or other illegal drugs inside.
What they didn’t expect was the quantity of drugs discovered in the house at 1194 36th Ave. NE, Sgt. Darry Stacy said.
The Special Operations team found 200 pounds of bricked marijuana and 10 pounds of cocaine in the Thursday afternoon raid, Stacy said.
The discovery is the single largest seizure of illegal drugs in the police department’s history, Stacy said.
Another surprise was a hand grenade found in a dresser drawer at the house, Stacy said.
The department’s Special Weapons and Tactical Team successfully removed and detonated the hand grenade, Stacy said.
No one was home when the search warrant was executed.
The man and woman who live there are being investigated on drug distribution complaints and probably will face federal drug charges as a result of the raid, Stacy said.
Also found in the search were a handgun and rifle reported stolen in Texas, Stacy said.
Federal agents learned about the house in the course of another investigation, Stacy said.
“The address was referred to us, and we believed we had probable cause to get a search warrant to look for drugs,” Stacy said. “We didn’t expect to find as much as we did. It came as quite a surprise.”
